Hand surgery

Day surgery for my partner for a broken hand bone - that part went ok - but when we left and had been told that we would have a call to get the plaster cast slab off (whole forearm! ) Maroondah failed in the biggest of ways!

My partner tried to call them, only to be passed from person to person, who had no idea what they were doing. Finally get to when my partner should have had their slab removed from their hand, but gets no call. Calls them and gets stuffed around again, passed to voicemails and people that have no idea what they were talking about. Completely...Read more

Box Hill Maternity - Know Your Midwife.

Recently I had my first baby at Box Hill Hospital. We were fortunate to be accepted into the Know Your Midwife Program and had Vanessa as our key midwife. Our experience was outstanding and would recommend it to any of our family and friends. The consistency in care with the same Midwife and the relationship that was built was invaluable. I really appreciated having one person giving me consistent advice and took on board everything that was recommended.

When we went into labour we were able to call Vanessa and get advice of when to come into hospital and to meet...Read more

    Treatment at Maroondah Hospital

I had severe pain in my left arm, wrist and across my shoulder and up into my neck and at 74 you tend to at least check it out. I went to where the after hours clinic was and found it not only closed but gone! ! ! Apparently 2 months ago.

After some minor research I found out Eastern Health had opened up an after hours clinic just a fortnight ago. Thank goodness. However I also discovered that they had had no patients because none of the locals knew they were there.

The doctor on duty suggested I ring the ambo's because he wasn't happy...Read more

    Chest infection

The patient had a chest infection. She was sent home from hospital after a week and her GP was to take over her care. Unfortunately, the GP decided for whatever reason to take her off antibiotics and discontinue treatment without ever bothering to do an x-ray. Mind you this is the night after a doctor to the home advised her to take new antibiotics or return to hospital. Your mother is well is a phrase was repeated to me several times - two days before almost a litre of fluid was surgically removed from her lung.

    Suggestions

These are purely suggestions. The person I was caring for had very good service. My first suggestion is that a proforma be created to help a carer transfer information & knowledge. This is to be used in emergency, to be used when the person is transferred to a ward. It seems that all the information that I handed over on the person I was caring for. Did not get onto the ward. This is to be expected when the person could have had numerous shifts of medical staff through & different carer's in.

Just a quick one, with meal time information, which...Read more

MGP program at Box Hill Hospital

We were a part of the Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) program at Box Hill and were very impressed with the care and support provided by our midwife and the MGP team. The antenatal visits and the MGP information session were thorough and prepared me well for birth and going home early. My midwife was fantastic during the birth. She was patient and supportive and provided the right balance between letting the birth take it's natural course and intervening with some suggested positions and pain management techniques when I had trouble during the second stage. An experience regarding a day procedure in the Gynae unit at Sunshine Hospital - Vic

I had my pre-admission appointment 2 weeks before the procedure which was very thorough and informative. At all stages I was given the time to ask questions and be informed. I arrived for my procedure a few minutes late at 7: 05. Unfortunately I was first on the list and had missed my name being called. It was probably 30 min before I started the prep. Despite my delay possibly making the list run late, at no time was I pressured or hurried during the prep process. Gratitude for the treatment by all connected with my heart attack and recovery.

From the moment that Ambulance Service became involved, through the transportation to Box Hill Hospital and the dedication of the Emergency personel, both doctors, nurses, radiographers, cardiology staff, it was apparent that I was indeed fortunate. The information that was being constantly provided, all contributed to my recovery and rehabilitation. Day surgery

Recently went to Yarra Ranges Health in Lilydale, Victoria for day surgery as a public patient. Very professional and excellent care. From admission to leaving was handled thoroughly. All information was checked and double checked as to whom and what was being done. From the admission nurse, then the theatre nurse, the surgeon and the anaesthetist, and finally the after care nurses. All were very personable and showed genuine care. The theatre nurse and the anaesthetist, both had time for a one on one personal chat and showed genuine interest. Very happy with the service provide here.Read more

    Box Hill Outpatients

Last week I attended Box Hill Hospital outpatients with my toddler for a followup appointment after surgery. Less than 24 hours earlier we received a voicemail message asking us to bring a referral from our GP. There was no way we could get to the GP before the appointment and the GP really has nothing to do with this case. Eastern Health performed the surgery and Eastern Health asked us to come back for a followup appointment.
Two weeks post the birth of my first child and I still feel so lucky that I was accepted into the Midwife Group Program (MGP) for care over the course of my pregnancy, birth and now home visits. My midwife, Vanessa, was amazing. It was such a privilege to have her for each of my check ups over the course of my pregnancy; the consistency in care and the trust it allowed me to develop with the one care provider was amazing. Compassionate, kind, efficient care in Box Hill Hospital ED

My mother in law had a stroke and was taken to Box Hill Hospital ED. Immediately upon arrival Chris, the Nurse In Charge facilitated emergency management. Apart from being clinically skilled Nicky has the personality to get the most out of those attending her classes. The sad part of these classes, aimed at improving the health and well being of the community, is that they are run on a fortnightly basis. Box Hill Outpatients Clinic appointments

I have been a patient at Box Hill Hospital during 2015 for a number of related surgeries after being diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and finished the year off with an Open Radical Prostatectomy late in the year, (there are also a lot of things I was not happy about then and I should have written about them). However this complaint is about the inadequate phone answering system and appointment booking system now in use. Clearly the manager that had this new system implemented has never had to use their own system. If they did they would discover some startling facts - the system clearly does...Read more

    Birth of my bub

I had my first appointment at Box Hill hospital when I was 3 months into my pregnancy. On our first visit, my husband and I met with a midwife who explained in detail what we should expect in the months to ahead. We were given booklets, pamphlets and a whole lot of information which then seemed like information overload. But then, once we got back home, we realized how professional and how very thorough everything had been. First impression was impressive! ! From then on, every monthly checkup has been smooth and every midwife / doctor who we have met has been amazingly friendly, caring and...Read more

Caring approach at ICU Box Hill

My uncle was visiting from Wales UK last month and had an unfortunate cardiac arrest in Lilydale just prior to his departure back to the UK with my aunt. He required significant life support and was not expected to live. As most of the family were in the UK they were summoned quickly but could not make it out for several days. The ICU staff were extremely sensitive and informative. They are true professionals and provided excellent support to our aunt and our family. My child had a brief and first psychotic episode late this year. It was a terrible shock to all of us and especially for me as I have worked in this field for many years. I contacted triage and they immediately went into action. Our Outer East CATT team came out within the day to see my child and patiently assessed what was going on for them. Once my child was in the Maroondah IPU, they had the very best of care. My child's strengths were acknowledged and their interests were considered by providing appropriate tools – even in the High Dependency Unit (HDU)! My child was never forced to...Read more

I just wanted to acknowledge the truly wonderful staff who looked after us from the minute we entered to the time we left. I was with my daughter who had severe abdominal cramps and nausea. Nurse Susan made her feel totally at ease and was so kind and sweet. Nurse Matt also made sure we were comfortable and warm. Special mention to Dr Craig who was so thorough and made her feel like my daughter was as important as the next patient. He assured her that she was welcome back should the pains start again. Care at Maroondah Hospital...

I am a chronic asthma patient with multiple admissions most in quick succession, at the Maroondah Hospital. What amazes me is the way I am treated right from the moment the ambulance rocks up at the emergency bay, to admission in the ED and in my case thereafter transfer to the ward or the ICU depending on my condition. Since I spent most of the time being admitted at the above ward, I shall concentrate on speaking about my experience in this ward. To be honest, each time I come here, I feel I am in a private hospital - the care is so good. Mind you, I do have topmost level of private...Read more

    Box Hill Emergency Visit

I am writing to express my thanks and satisfaction with my recent experience of Box Hill Emergency. My prior experiences of emergency departments has largely been confined to the private system. I will admit I was unsure what to expect on arrival at Box Hill by ambulance. I found the level of information, attention, attitude, expertise, feedback and comfort at Box Hill to not only equal but surpass anything I have previously experienced, personally, or when accompanying family members. felt unheard during emergency c-section

I had to have an emergency c-section following an induction. I discussed my anaesthetic history with the anaesthetist, which included that anaesthetics wear off really quickly, e.g. Lignocaine should last 60 mins on average lasts only 20 mins for me. The baby was delivered and then as they were suturing I tried to report that I could feel pain and what they were doing. But no one was standing near me. Then I was informed to calm down and it was normal to feel deep pressure. It wasn't until I screamed and showed that I could lift my previously very dead legs that they believed me. I was...Read more

Thank you for excellent treatment and stay at Maroondah Hospital

I would like to express my gratitude to the Ambulance Service and Maroondah Hospital for the excellent treatment I received. Recently I had a fall in the garden resulting in a badly lacerated leg and arm. The ambulance arrived very quickly and took me to the Emergency Department. A thank you to the doctors and nurses for their prompt care and attention given to me. Taking time to explain my situation and that I would require plastic surgery. Pleasant and unpleasant experience of an overseas patient presently admitted at Box Hill Hospital

It is with regret that I am writing this and not without deep thought and contemplation because being in the industry myself, I completely understand the nature and enormous amount of work that nurses do. Much as I'd like to give excuses to the minor details and basic nursing care and attention that I feel is lacking, this stressful time is made worse by my parent getting transferred to a shared room with a confused patient and for the last 2 nights, has no proper rest and sleep considering that my parent is awaiting surgical intervention. Another concern is the fact that being in a...Read more

    Surgery admission nurse

My spouse was hurt recently, they were on the surgery waiting list and settled in the surgical admission. The first day was great because the nurse was very nice to look after us even my child who was upset about their parent staying in the hospital. She tried her best to make them happy! The surgery was on the second day. I felt afraid because I don't have much experience in hospital. I tried to make myself a coffee to settle down. First time experience at Box Hill Hospital

This was my first time experience for an MRI. Instructions provided to find the facility were accurate and very good. The reception and introduction was very good and one would say 'caring' in nature. The explanation of the MRI machine, in particular the amount of noise was not well explained. As a first time experience it would have helped to hear a brief description of the different loud noises and that this experience is normal. Similarly there was no explanation of any possible side effects (or no expected side effects) for the MRI. The routine nature of the work and the...Read more

My confidence level with the referral system is very low

My ENT surgeon referred my toddler to Box Hill Hospital to be wait listed for public surgery. The surgeon told me to call BHH in a few weeks to confirm they had received the referral as they had a history of referrals not being received. After three weeks I called BHH. The nurses and surgeon were helpful, smiley and considerate. We had an uneventful day everything went smoothly thanks to everyone doing their job efficiently. Better management of waiting times needed

My parent is a patient of Maroondah and my friend was a patient at another Eastern Health site. I am disgusted with the amount of patients that seem to be pushed through the outpatient department at Maroondah, I sometimes have 2 to 3 hours waits for my parent's appointments. Also the staff I have come across seem pushed to the limit in very poor working conditions. I feel that management need to do something about the staff. It is a health centre and it seems to me that they are not looking after their own. Also we need a phone service that has the time to spend helping callers...Read more

Very happy with care at Box Hill

I was a patient in Box Hill Hospital last week and I was very happy with the care I received from the doctors, nurses and other members of the healthcare team. I particularly want to thank ED nurse Bart, short stay nurse Sophie and Eric the physiotherapist who all attended my care. I found these individuals very helpful as they made sure I was aware of all information relevant to my care and they explained all procedures prior to receiving them. Overall a great stay in Box Hill.Read more

Go home they said, get some fresh air

My adult child came into Box Hill with excruciating headaches, couldn't stand up, was crying in pain. They were told they had pneumonia (although chest x-ray clear) normal bloods. Go home they said. Get some fresh air. My child couldn't stand up, they were reviewed by no senior person. Good Work ED, my child actually had a terrible leak in their spinal fluids, they are still in Epworth Neurology ward after multiple procedures, where they should have gone first obviously, although Box Hill was the closest. If you don't know what the hell is wrong with someone in so much pain,...Read more

In excruciating pain and left waiting for 9 hours

I had to attend the Goulburn Valley Health for pain management (something that I had been advised to do due to a chronic condition) and was told by the triage person (I refuse to call them a nurse) that there could be up to a 4 hour wait. The triage person took my pulse (which was fast) and blood pressure (which was high) and told me to sit down. No problem - I can understand they get busy. 7 hours later with not a single word or glance from triage, I am told that I will be seen within 30 minutes. As I was in so much pain that driving home was not possible, I continued to wait for another 2...Read more

They always say people aged over 50 shouldn't climb ladders - they are right!

I was up a ladder, slipped and I fell to the ground with severe pain in my back. An ambulance was called & I was brought to the emergency department at Box Hill. I was first treated in the emergency department and after x-rays & scans I was moved to the short stay area where I stayed until a bed became available at the Austin hospital the following evening. I would especially like to thank the staff who looked after me in the short stay department - Catherine (afternoon shifts), Kath (night shifts) & Sarah (morning shift). Did my husband receive the best care?

    • My husband had been receiving ongoing treatment at Peninsula Private Hospital. One day while at home, he was not well and I was advised to take him to the hospital. • While my husband was getting ready to go he fell over and I was unable to lift him, this resulted in me calling for an ambulance. The ambulance staff were going to take my husband to Peninsula Private but were advised to take him to William Angliss as Peninsula Private did not have a room available. • Paramedics took my husband to the Emergency Department and he was well looked after by a doctor and a very competent nurse...Read more

A bit of hope creeps in through the darkness

My case manager, Leanne has saved my life more times than one. I have so much respect and admiration for her. She is passionate about her job and also really cares and listens. Hope is so hard to find when you are drowned in despair

I would like to show my appreciation for the staff in IPU1 at Maroondah Hospital. I was recently admitted only for one night but have such respect for the people working there. Having a mental illness carries extreme pain, anxiety and shame- but I felt like a human being for once. I'd like to say a special thanks to my nurse, Lisa. In just a short time she listened to me and gave me some hope that perhaps maybe things will get better. There is a huge stigma attached to mental illness which I have experienced too many times in the emergency setting but what mental health needs is more...Read more

The care and understanding shown during a difficult time was astounding

My beautiful daughter was sadly diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy. I just wanted to praise all the staff in the ED, from the triage nurse, doctors, nurses, trainee staff, as well as all the staff in day surgery, most of all Ros the midwife. The care and understanding you have all shown my daughter through this difficult time is astounding, I cannot thank you all enough. I understand it can be a very tough job at times, but would like to let you all know how much your care has meant to us, as this was her first pregnancy. The too hard Radiology et al machine beds

I had an MRI early June and the bed seriously hurt me particularly one hip. Many people cannot tolerate such hard machine beds, those with bed sores, muscular skeletal diseases, MS etc. in an Ageing population this situation will only escalate. Research shows that up to 40% of patients cannot tolerate the hard beds, as the high pressure shunts blood flow away from areas of the body creating ischemic pain often resulting in injury or prolonged pain. Operators have to stop start or send patient home to come back another time which is stressful on patient. Costly on our system. The 2 staff on...Read more

    Teenager with acute stomach pain

Friday night I returned home from work at 5. 30pm to find my teenage child with acute stomach pain. My child had stayed home from school that day as had been vomitting during the night and I thought this was simply a case of gastro. My husband and I ended up taking our teenager to the Angliss Hospital in Upper Ferntree Gully by 7pm. Was diagnosed with appendicitis by 8pm.
